Improved Turf Varieties
ASTC has been engaged by Barenbrug Australia Pty Ltd to conduct an independent research study to evaluate the shade tolerance of a series of new and improved turfgrass varieties for possible use within the Australian macadamia industry.
The study follows a series of workshops organised by the Australian Macadamia Society (AMS) where ASTC Director Matt Roche spoke about the possibilities of using new and improved turfgrass varieties within the orchard and how the orchard floor can be better maintained prior to harvest.
The research study commenced in February 2021 after a delay because of COVID-19. More information will be available soon.
Project Brief
To identify the shade tolerance of seeded turfgrasses that may be suitable for planting within Australian macadamia orchards to:
- provide desirable ground cover
- limit/prevent soil erosion
- improve harvestability of macadamia nuts from the orchard floor
Methodology
- Trial location: Redlands Research Station, Cleveland, QLD
- Seeded turf varieties: Sweet smother, Zoysia, Carpet Grass, Bahia and Couch
- Shade treatments: Control, 30%, 50%, 70% and 90%
- Assessment times: 14, 28, 50 and 70 days after seeding
- Data collection: Colour, quality, % cover and shade assessment using PAR light meter
