Australian Sports Turf Consultants was called upon to undertake an independent assessment of the playing field surface, including turf quality and soil nutritional status, of East Brisbane Football Club’s number 2 field. The assessment was requested to determine suitable sports turf varieties that would meet site conditions, the clubs available resources and expected usage before redevelopment works.
Choice of turfgrass for a sports or playing field is often made on the basis of cost and availability, whereas turf quality, wear tolerance and recovery, and general maintenance attributes should be of greater importance. Many sports venues and Councils make their decision on the initial outlay e.g. dollars per square meter or purchase cost of turf for their field; whereas greater attention should be given to the maintenance plan and available resources (labor and budgets) needed for different turf varieties, based on the life expectancy of the sports field.
