Improved Turf Varieties
ASTC has been engaged by Barenbrug Australia Pty Ltd to conduct an independent research study to evaluate the shade tolerance of a series of new and improved turfgrass varieties for possible use within the Australian macadamia industry.
The study follows a series of MacGroup workshops organised by the Australian Macadamia Society (AMS) where ASTC Director Matt Roche spoke about the possibilities of using new and improved turfgrass varieties within the orchard and how the orchard floor can be better maintained prior to harvest.
The research study commenced in February 2021 after a delay because of COVID-19.
Project Brief
To identify the shade tolerance of seeded turfgrasses that may be suitable for planting within Australian macadamia orchards to:
- provide desirable ground cover
- limit/prevent soil erosion
- improve harvestability of macadamia nuts from the orchard floor
Methodology
- Trial location: QLD Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, Redlands Research Station, Cleveland, QLD 4163
- Duration: 11 February to 27 April 2021
- Seeded turf varieties: Sweet smother, Zoysia, Carpet Grass, Bahia and Couch. For information on species and varieties visit www.TurfFinder.com
- Shade treatments: Control (0%), 30%, 50%, 70% and 90% shade
- Assessment times: 14, 28, 50 and 70 days after seed sowing
- Data collection: Colour, quality, germination count, % green cover and shade assessment using PAR light meter
